Takada Muneyuki(高田統行) katana
A fine katana is fine polish and condition
By all aspects it was likely made by the first generation right after the Muromachi period ended, in the 1570-1580’s, but still kept many muromachi era features. It has been shortened, but what makes it rather rare is the gaku-mei, a special technique used to preserve the original mei when the nakago is cut down but the mei part is saved and reinserted in a thin slab form. This technique was very difficult and costly those days and done on highly rated swords. Unfortunately as it has 5 holes, shows it was shortened many times, so even the reattached mei is gone, only a part of the slab remained. At least we know it was signed originaly and had an expensive work on it.
It has NBTHK Hozon paper, old shirasaya and koshirae.
The saya is nicely painted but has some dings with amateur repairs.
Nagasa: 68,2 cm
Sori 1.8cm
Width 29mm
Thickness 6mm
full sword length: 104cm
Takada Muneyuki, from the Takada school, founded in the late Kamakura period. This Katana has a stunning gunome-midare hamon. The Jihada consists mostly of itame hada.
Muneyuki was one of the leading names of the Bungo Takada school founded in the Kakamura period, producing battle-ready, durable and sharp blades. The name was carried by many successive generations.
