Large Kutani Vase – Turquoise Glaze, Black & Gold Phoenixes – With Wooden Box

Item Description:
Kutani ware is a Japanese ceramic tradition distinguished by its decorative use of colour and overglaze enamels. In this tradition, painted decoration is fired onto the glazed surface, bringing expressive linework and colour to the finished vessel.

This large vase combines a generously rounded body with a striking turquoise and deep-blue colour scheme. Bright blue-green tones across the shoulders give way to irregular bands of indigo, deepening towards a dark brown-black lower body. The softly shifting boundaries between the colours create depth across the curved surface.

A pair of phoenixes faces one another across the front, their black silhouettes outlined and detailed in gold. Sweeping wings, long flowing tail feathers and distinctive crests create a bold, balanced composition. Fine gold lines articulate the plumage, standing out vividly against the blue-green background.

A pair of small, symmetrical scroll-shaped ornaments accents the shoulders. The broad opening has a contrasting brown-toned rim, while the interior is finished with a pale greyish glaze. The wide proportions give the vase a substantial decorative presence, even when displayed without flowers.

The vase comes with a wooden storage box inscribed “九谷焼” (Kutani ware), “花瓶” (vase) and “敏鳳”, matching the name on the base.

Maker / Mark:
The base bears the red inscription “Kutani Binho 九谷 敏鳳”.
The name “敏鳳” also appears on the wooden box.

Condition:
Good overall condition, with no significant chips or cracks noted. Minor surface scratches are present in the dark-glazed area near the base, together with light signs of age and use.
