A fascinating and historically anomalous colonial copper issue struck at the Rio de Janeiro mint, officially intended for São Tomé and Príncipe but redirected or discharged by historical error into circulation in Mozambique.

Obverse (A): Crown dividing a beaded circle, with the date (1820) and denomination (40) enclosed inside, encircled by the formal royal legend: JOANNES . VI . D . G . PORT . BRAS . ET . ALG . REX.

Reverse (R): Shield centered inside an armillary sphere (symbolizing the Portuguese overseas empire), encircled by the colonial motto: PECUNIA TOTUM CIRCUMIT ORBEM ("Money circles the whole world").

Historical Context & Numismatic Anomaly:

The Logistics Error: Struck at the bustling Rio de Janeiro mint while the Portuguese royal court resided in Brazil, this specific emission of 40-réis copper coins was originally scheduled for delivery to São Tomé and Príncipe. Due to maritime shipping errors and logistical redirection, the cargo was unloaded and put into active commercial circulation in Mozambique instead.

Colonial Circulation: These heavy copper pieces provided vital small change for local trade within East African colonial outposts, serving alongside other circulating coppers of the Portuguese Atlantic and Indian Ocean territories.
