Cheval effrayé par le sang
Model conceived in 1953; bronze edition cast in 1987.
An important and striking large-scale bronze relief by André Masson, a major figure of the Surrealist movement.
The composition depicts a horse in a dramatic expression of movement and fear, rendered in Masson's distinctive, expressive sculptural language. Its dynamic forms, dark patina and partially painted details reflect the artist's exploration of instinct, violence and the relationship between humans and animals.
Originally conceived as a terracotta model in 1953, *Cheval effrayé par le sang* was subsequently produced in bronze in 1987 by the Brustolin foundry in Verona, Italy, for Galerie Due Ci, Rome.
The bronze edition is documented as comprising 12 numbered examples and two artist's proofs.
