Pergamon rose from a fortified hilltop settlement in Mysia to become the capital of the Attalid kingdom. Its rulers transformed the city into a centre of Hellenistic art and learning, celebrated for its monumental architecture and library, which rivalled Alexandria’s. Allied with Rome, the kingdom expanded across western Asia Minor. In 133 BC, Attalos III bequeathed his realm to Rome, paving the way for the province of Asia.
