Item Description
This is a beautiful set of two vases by Ryūmon-yaki (流紋焼), a distinctive kiln within the Aizu-Hongo ware (会津本郷焼) tradition of Fukushima Prefecture, dating from the 1980s.
***Please note: photos 2, 3, and 4 are not AI-generated. They are genuine reference photos showing the vases styled with real flowers, with care taken to protect the vases themselves.
Both pieces are glazed in Ryūmon-yaki’s signature “nagashi-yū” (流し釉, flowing glaze) technique: multiple colored glazes are applied and allowed to melt and run together in the kiln at around 1250°C, producing the vivid, rainbow-like striped and marbled surface pattern this kiln is famous for. Because the glazes move unpredictably in the fire, no two pieces are ever exactly alike.
The larger vase has an elegant pitcher-like form with a pulled handle and flaring lip, while the smaller vase has a classic rounded bottle form; both stand on a glossy black-glazed foot and are signed on the underside, reading "東山永山" (Higashiyama Eizan), a workshop/artisan mark associated with the kiln.
Ryūmon-yaki was originally founded in 1900 as a manufacturer of porcelain electrical insulators; in the postwar years it established an art ceramics division and adapted the red, blue, and brown glaze chemistry developed for industrial insulators into these flowing art glazes, naming the resulting ware “Ryūmon” (流紋, “flowing pattern”) to express what the kiln describes as the natural spirit of the clay itself. Aizu-Hongo ware as a whole traces its roots back to 1593, when tile makers were brought to the region to roof Aizuwakamatsu Castle, with full ceramic production established in the early Edo period; it was designated a Japanese Traditional Craft in 1993.
A striking, highly decorative and genuinely unique pair, in excellent, close-to-new condition.

Artist Profile
Ryūmon-yaki (流紋焼) is a kiln of the Aizu-Hongo ware (会津本郷焼) tradition, based in Aizumisato, Fukushima Prefecture. Aizu-Hongo ware as a whole dates back to 1593, when tile makers were brought to the region to produce roofing for Aizuwakamatsu Castle, with full-scale pottery production established in the early Edo period under the Aizu domain; it survived damage in the 1868 Boshin War and a fire in 1916, and was designated a Japanese Traditional Craft in 1993.
Ryūmon-yaki itself was founded in 1900 as a manufacturer of ceramic electrical insulators. After the Second World War, the company launched an art ceramics division, repurposing the red, blue, and brown glaze chemistry it had developed for industrial insulators into a new decorative “flowing glaze” (流し釉) technique, melting and running multiple colored glazes together in the kiln to create vivid, swirling, one-of-a-kind surface patterns. This vase pair is signed on the base "東山永山," an artisan or workshop mark associated with the kiln.
