Rare Richard-Ginori “Paola” Dinner Service – Edera Decoration | Gio Ponti Design | Italy, 1950s–1970s
An exceptional and beautifully preserved example of Italian mid-century tableware, this Richard-Ginori “Paola” dinner service features the highly sought-after “Edera” floral decoration, considered one of the rarest patterns associated with the Mondovì series.
Introduced in 1953 and produced until the early 1970s, the Paola collection became one of Richard-Ginori’s most successful tableware lines throughout the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.
The elegant shape of the service, distinguished by its soft, flowing lines and beautifully balanced proportions, is attributed to the legendary Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti.
Originally manufactured in earthenware at the Mondovì factory and later in Laveno, the Paola collection was celebrated for its remarkable variety of floral decorations. Approximately 20 different patterns were created, featuring botanical motifs such as bellflowers, begonias and hibiscus.
These vibrant floral designs, associated with Italian designer Cesare Lacca, were applied to a white background using traditional hand-decoration techniques, including sponge and brushwork.
The exceptionally rare “Edera” decoration makes this particular service especially desirable. Each piece is delicately decorated by hand with an expressive botanical composition, reflecting the artistic spirit and craftsmanship of mid-century Italian ceramics.
The 21-Piece Service Includes:
* 1 large soup tureen
* 1 rectangular serving dish with raised sides
* 1 round serving bowl / salad bowl
* 6 deep soup plates
* 6 dinner plates
* 6 bread / dessert plates
A Collector’s Piece
More than a dinner service, this is a beautiful example of Italian design history, combining the timeless elegance of the Gio Ponti-attributed Paola shape with the artistic charm of the rare Edera decoration.
Its distinctive floral pattern, refined silhouettes and historical connection to one of Italy’s most celebrated ceramic manufacturers make this set a wonderful addition to a collection of Italian mid-century design, vintage Richard-Ginori ceramics or rare decorative tableware.
A remarkable opportunity to acquire a coordinated 21-piece service in one of the collection’s most elusive decorations — equally captivating as a collector’s treasure or as a statement setting for an elegant table.
