Metapontion, founded by Achaean settlers on the fertile coastal plain of Lucania, prospered through agriculture and trade. Its distinctive barley-ear coinage proclaimed the importance of grain to the city’s wealth and identity. Closely associated with Pythagoras, who spent his final years there, Metapontion became an important centre of Greek life in southern Italy.
