卖家的描述

Rare Asmat Ceremonial Waistband

An exceptional and authentic ceremonial waistband from the Asmat people of southwestern New Guinea, Papua, Indonesia. This remarkable ethnographic object was field collected in 1958 by a Dutch doctor working in the region, giving it an interesting and well-documented early collecting history.

The waistband is carefully handcrafted from natural jungle fibres, intricately woven into a long, narrow band decorated with a distinctive geometric pattern. Attached to one end is a large, naturally shaped Cymbium shell, suspended by a strong cord made from twisted plant fibres.

The combination of finely woven natural materials and the impressive shell reflects the traditional craftsmanship of the Asmat people, who made extensive use of materials obtained from their surrounding tropical environment.

Shell ornaments were highly valued in traditional Asmat society and could serve as important elements of ceremonial attire, personal adornment and expressions of social identity. The striking simplicity of this particular piece gives it a powerful ethnographic character.

The waistband is in a very good state of preservation, especially considering its age and the delicate nature of the organic materials. The original woven structure, decorative pattern, suspension cord and shell have survived remarkably well.

A rare and attractive example of traditional Asmat material culture, particularly interesting because of its early field collection in 1958, during a period when many Asmat communities still maintained their traditional ways of life.

An excellent collector’s item for enthusiasts of Oceanic tribal art, early ethnographic collections and the traditional cultures of New Guinea.

Materials: Natural jungle fibres, woven plant fibres and Cymbium shell.

Condition: Very good, with minor signs of age and traditional use.
