Large Carved Wooden Spoon – Ethiopia – Rich Geometric Decoration – 43 cm
Origin: Ethiopia
Type: Large carved wooden spoon
Material: Wood
Dimensions: Length 43 cm
Period: Probably 1950s–1970s
Provenance: Personally collected in Ethiopia by the present owner in the early 1990s
Display stand: Not included
A remarkable large Ethiopian wooden spoon, distinguished by its richly incised geometric decoration, elegant elongated proportions and beautifully developed dark reddish-brown patina.
Measuring 43 cm in length, the spoon combines a long, flat, extensively decorated handle with a slender, leaf-shaped bowl.
The handle is particularly attractive, its surface covered with successive bands of fine parallel incisions, short vertical strokes and zigzag motifs. These carefully arranged patterns create a strong visual rhythm, contrasting with the smooth, undecorated sections of the wood.
The upper terminal is shaped into a stylised pointed form, pierced with a small hole, probably intended for suspension.
The long, shallow, canoe-shaped bowl, with its subtly upturned tip and softly rounded underside, flows into the handle through an elegant sculpted transition. It has a softly hollowed interior, displaying a deep, dark patina and numerous traces of use.
Throughout the piece, the wood shows warm reddish-brown tones, darker polished areas, fine scratches and natural variations in surface texture.
The result is an object of considerable sculptural elegance, in which the refinement of the decoration is matched by the remarkable balance of its proportions.
Cultural context
Wooden and horn spoons form part of the rich traditions of everyday utensils found throughout Ethiopia and the wider Horn of Africa.
Such objects were made for domestic use, including the preparation, handling and serving of food.
Beyond their practical purpose, many examples display considerable care in their shaping and decoration. Incised geometric patterns, carved terminals and carefully worked transitions between handle and bowl reflect the importance attached to the appearance of functional objects.
The present example is particularly appealing for its elaborate ornamentation and slender, almost architectural silhouette.
Condition
Good overall condition, with numerous old scratches, abrasions, small edge irregularities and surface wear consistent with age and prolonged use.
The richly incised decoration remains clearly visible, and the wood retains an attractive, deep reddish-brown patina.
Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.
Included
The wooden spoon only.
The metal display stand visible in the photographs is not included in the sale.
