vintage Japanese Tabletop Folding Screen – “Ōchō Emaki” – Heian Court Scenes

An elegant vintage Japanese four-panel tabletop folding screen with its accompanying storage box labelled 王朝絵巻御屏風 (“Ōchō Emaki” folding screen).

The composition depicts the refined world of Japan’s Heian-period aristocracy, with figures in flowing court robes, palace interiors, verandas, and a boat on deep green waters. These scenes evoke the graceful atmosphere of courtly life.

Rich gold-toned backgrounds and sweeping golden clouds lend the composition a luxurious appearance, beautifully contrasting with the deep greens and touches of red. Despite its compact size, the screen makes an eye-catching decorative accent. The gold-coloured areas are described by their appearance; genuine gold leaf has not been confirmed.

A dark decorative border with gold-coloured patterns frames the scenes. The reverse features a subtle repeating pattern in soft green.

Ideal for a shelf, sideboard, or desk, this miniature screen brings the elegance of Japanese courtly imagery to traditional and contemporary interiors alike. Its folding construction allows the display angle to be adjusted.

Dimensions
Approximately 47 cm wide × 23 cm high when fully opened and laid flat.
The displayed width is smaller when the panels are angled.
