卖家的描述

ITEM: Modern pendant with Valerianus I Follis

PERIOD: 3rd Century A.D
DIMENSIONS: 24 mm diameter
CONDITION: Good condition. Original coin within a modern handmade circular silver setting.
PROVENANCE: Ex Belgian private collection, acquired in the 1990s

Comes with Certificate of Authenticity.

Emperor Valerian, ruling from AD 253 to 260, governed during one of the most tumultuous eras of the Roman Empire, known as the Crisis of the Third Century. Rising to power following a period of rapid imperial successions, Valerian attempted to restore stability to a state fractured by foreign invasions, internal rebellions, and severe economic collapse. Recognizing the impossibility of governing such a vast realm alone amidst simultaneous threats on multiple frontiers, he elevated his son Gallienus to co-emperor, dividing military responsibilities between the western and eastern provinces.

Valerian’s reign was marked by intense religious policy and persistent military conflict. In AD 257 and 258, he issued imperial edicts initiating a widespread persecution of Christians, ordering the execution of clergy, the confiscation of church property, and the demotion of Christian nobles who refused to sacrifice to the traditional Roman gods. Simultaneously, Valerian focused his military efforts on the eastern frontier, where the rising Sasanian Empire under King Shapur I posed a grave threat to Rome's Syrian and Anatolian territories.

The culmination of Valerian's rule resulted in an unprecedented disaster in Roman imperial history. In AD 260, following a devastating outbreak of plague among his troops during the Siege of Edessa, Valerian met with Shapur I to negotiate terms of peace, where he was betrayed and captured alive. Spent in Persian captivity until his death, Valerian became the first and only Roman emperor ever taken prisoner by a foreign enemy, an event that dealt a profound symbolic blow to Roman prestige and triggered further fragmentation across the empire.
