Job van Meekeren - Observationes medico-chirurgicae - 1682

8vo, [16]- 392- [5] pp. Engraved title-page with surgical scenes and 59 ill. in text. Contemporary vellum binding. Job van Meekeren (1611-1666) of Amsterdam was a surgeon, respected by outstanding contemporary medical doctors for his knowledge of medical literature and his skills, who made a definite link between anatomy and surgery. Van Meekeren was a pupil of Nicolaas Tulp, He was respected by outstanding contemporary medical doctors for his knowledge of medical literature and his skills, who made a definite link between anatomy and surgery. He showed a great interest in hand surgery, and interesting is a demonstration of flexor tendon repairs on corpses by one of his pupils. He wrote a book, which gives a good representation of the state of the art of surgery in the seventeenth century in Amsterdam. Names and addresses of patients are fully mentioned, so even today it is known exactly where they lived and where the events took place. He showed a great interest in hand surgery, and interesting is a demonstration of flexor tendon repairs on corpses by one of his pupils. It is still a great joy to read his book today, which also gives a good representation of the state of the art of surgery in the seventeenth century in Amsterdam, Meekeren was the first to record a bone graft. He states here in this book that he had read a report of it in a letter received from a missionary in Russia, where the operation was also attempted. A piece of bone was taken from a dog's skull and placed into a cranial defect in a soldier. Healing was perfect, but the Church ordered the removal of the graft. An important book, here in Latin for European distribution. An excellent copy with remarkable in-text illustratioms, several full page. The book is scarce and seldom appears on the market. Ref. Bibl. Med. Neerl. I 59. Krivatsy 7674. Latin translation by the medical student Abraham Blasius (b. 1650) of ""Heel-en geneeskonstige aanmerkingen"" (1668)"
