古罗马 玻璃 绿色串珠项链
An elegant restrung glass necklace from the Roman era. The beads are all different shapes and sizes, as well as different shades of green, carefully arranged so that the larger beads are nearer the centre and the beads gradually decrease in size towards the end. The centrepiece of the necklace is formed by a cluster of four beads - most striking of which is a trapezoidal green bead with white trailing. Please note this necklace is unclasped and threaded on string.
Glass had become more of a malleable material following the invention of glass blowing in the 1st century AD, allowing for new shapes and moulds to become popular in Roman society; in some instances, glass production had caused for other more common materials such as clay to be less worthwhile for the production of some wares such as cups. One of these innovations included colouring the glass which was done using different metal oxides.
Measurements: Half length 42.5cm, beaded length 21cm
Provenance: Ex private UK collection, acquired 1990s.
