Josephus Schettinus, Giuseppe Schettino - Tractatus Varii; nempe De Jure Offerendi Creditori; De tertio Veniente ad Causam; et De Pactis - 1702

Full first titlepage: Josephi Schettini J.U.D. et in regia audientia ulterioris calabriae causarum patroni, De jure offerendi creditori, et in ejus locum succedendi, tractatus absolutissimus : in quo frequentiores juris articuli, et quaestiones ad materiam pertinentes, ac ad praxim accommodatae, facili methodo, & rerum judicatarum exemplis, enucleantur : opus omnibus juris utriusque professoribus, & in curiarum subselliis causas agentibus, maximé utile, ac necessarium : cui accesserunt enodationes ad ornatum l. 3. C. novationibus : additis nonnullis recentissimis sacrae rotae Romanae decisionibus ad materiam juris offerendi spectantibus. Venetiis MDCCII (1702) Apud Paulum Balleonium The 3 Tractatus, total of 759 pages: De Iure Offerendi: 205 pp 13pp. index Enodationes ad legem tertiam: 64pp 6pp index D. Ludovici Morotii Monteregalensis, Quaestiones de Jure Offerendi: 15pp. De Tertio veniente ad causam: 176pp. 8pp. index De Pactis successionum: 260pp 12pp index Latin text in 2 columns. These three treatises are dealing with commercial contracts, real estate, loans, debts, third parties, witnesses, proxies, contract law, inheritance law and the like. The 17th century lawyer Schettinus was member the Schettini family, who lived in the Naples area and belonged to Italy's nobility (and still does). Several family members were, like Giuseppe, known lawyers, others were men of letters. Giuseppe was born in Tiriolo (date of birth unknown) and died in Catanzaro in 1700. He studied law in Naples and settled in Cantanzaro for his lawpractice. The title pages of these works indicate he was as canon lawyer active in the region of Calabria. This 1702 Venetian edition is the posthumous collection of his main works. In Tiriolo the Palazzo Schettini still exists. Volume contains three distinct works by Josephi Schettini + a small treatise by Ludovicus Morotius (included in Treatise 1). Each part is separately paginated, but was printed as part of the overall whole based on the half-title page displaying the overall contents. Contemporary vellum, folio, 4 raised bands. Large book 34 x 23,5 x 5cm (ca. 2,3 kg). Some minor wear on the parchement and the cut, faded (coeval?) pencil notes on title page. Pages are a bit darkened, some a bit more than others, especially 2 pages (front and backside) in Treatise 1 (see picture). One page is missing a small corner and another has a little tear. Occasional small spots, but not affecting the text. Pages are overall very clean. Solid binding. Book is in overall good condition and has been very well preserved for its age. The book is of incredible learning, acumen and detail, using Roman Law, partially Church Law and jurisprudence to the date of Schettinus. A real treasure for lawyers on the subject and lawhistorians. But the book displays also indirectly a picture of the society of Schettinus' days, not only legal-financial matters, but e.g. the position of women as well. Extremely rare book
