Apart from the world-famous 'Einzellage' Ürziger Würzgarten as such there's a special red-slate area with remarkable micro-climate called "Urglück". One of the very few owners is high-aged Alfred Merkelbach (left) who together with his recently passed away brother Rolf (right) inherited 1,5 ha of this Einzellage, as well as part of that "Urglück" piece (and part of the nearby "Kinheimer Rosenberg") from his/their mother, one of the "Geschwister Albertz". Due to circumstances at an early age the brothers had taken over from their father the labour in vineyards and cellar. Ever since, they sticked to the same legendary traditional way of wine-making their father had taught them, inspite of modern visions. [The "Trocken" / Dry trend never was 'their cup of tea' ...]. In 2020 Alfred (in his late eighties!) found long time friends the Selbach family willing to take over the labour, though still under his personal supervision! In the course of the last decade of independent wine-making the Merkelbach brothers became a true cult status among insiders who perfectly understand that consequent approach and philosophy.
