A vibrant Western Asiatic gold pendant, featuring a stack of beads of various materials, shapes and sizes. The piece is composed of an oblong gold bead, a yellow cuboid glass bead, three gold beads affixed with a trapezoid red jasper bead, followed by a gold granulated bead and a small facetted garnet bead. The stack is held in place by two interlocked gold wires and is secured at the bottom with a looped knot. A suspension loop sits at the top.
Many grand civilisations inhabited the area of Western Asia in Antiquity, and their wealth and prosperity is witnessed by the very sophisticated precious metal crafting of jewellery. Gold would have been hammered down to a thin layer and manipulated into different shapes. Gold and silver jewellery were also enriched with gold granules, glass and semi-precious stone inlays and detailed engravings. Very fine granulation along with filigree, were at the centre of Near Eastern and Western Asiatic jewellery production and were later adopted by the Greeks, Etruscans and Romans.
