Seljuk Pottery Oil Lamps (3)
Circa 12th-13th century AD
This diverse collection presents three pottery oil lamps, each featuring a broad, carinated body with a projecting spout, a sizable filler hole, and a D-shaped handle with a decorative thumb rest. Two of these lamps are distinguished by a cream glaze embellished with splashes of brown, green, and blue hues, while the third boasts a rich, brown glaze.
The Seljuks, a prominent medieval Turkic dynasty, emerged in the 11th century from the steppes of Central Asia. The foundation of the dynasty was laid by Tughril Beg, and it gained prominence across a vast expanse, including regions of Anatolia, the Middle East, and Central Asia.
