Ancient Roman Glass Ribbed Phiale Bowl - Beautiful!
Circa 1st century AD
This beautiful mould-made bowl is crafted from aqua-coloured glass, exhibiting a rounded body with a distinctive form. The vessel has a contracting concave neck, leading to the main body, which is embellished with thick, radiating ribs around the base.
The glassmaking process in ancient Rome typically commenced with the gathering of raw materials, including sand, soda, and lime. These ingredients were fused together at high temperatures to form a molten glass, which could then be shaped and molded into desired forms. Techniques such as mold blowing and free-blowing were commonly utilized to shape glass objects, allowing for the creation of intricate and diverse forms.
