The tōsei sode evolved from the larger, heavier ōsode of earlier times, reflecting the needs of close-quarters combat during the Sengoku period. They are crafted from iron plates, lacquered and laced with dark cords. The compact form prioritised mobility and practicality over the larger designs used previously for mounted archery. The top parts are decorated with brocade textile padding featuring an elaborate woven design with phoenix, peony, and scrolling floral motifs, adding aesthetic refinement to the functional armour component. These shoulder guards exhibit expected signs of age and use, including areas of lacquer loss, cracks, lifting lacquer, fraying and discolouration of the cords, dust, and surface wear.
