【Product details】
This elegant tea ceremony set from the Showa period features two works by distinguished Kyoto artists: a matcha bowl by Heian Shōhō and a lacquered natsume by Nishijima Uhyō, each accompanied by its original signed wooden box.
The Kyoto ware matcha bowl by Heian Shōhō is crafted in the Ninsei-utsushi style, inspired by the refined polychrome ceramics of the Edo-period master Nonomura Ninsei. The surface is delicately painted with nandina (heavenly bamboo), narcissus, and bamboo against a soft cream ground. These motifs carry auspicious meanings — nandina is believed to ward off misfortune, narcissus symbolises purity and renewal, and bamboo represents strength and perseverance. The artist’s seal is inscribed on the base, and the box bears Heian Shōhō’s signature and seal.
The lacquered natsume by Nishijima Uhyo is finished in a deep brown lacquer and decorated with a pine tree in gold maki-e. The pine, an enduring symbol of longevity and vitality, remains evergreen throughout the seasons and is often used in tea ceremony utensils as a sign of good fortune. The accompanying wooden box is also signed and sealed by Nishijima Uhyō.
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique in which gold or silver powder is sprinkled over wet lacquer to create intricate designs with luminous depth and shimmer.
Both pieces are in very good condition with minimal wear. The wooden boxes show patina and minor blemishes appropriate to age. Please refer to the photographs for details.
