¶ Edward Quinn (1920–1997) was born in Ireland. From the 1950s he lived and worked as a photographer fon the Côte d'Azur, the playground of the celebrities from the world of show biz, art and business.
In 1951 Edward Quinn met and photographed Pablo Picasso for the first time. Their friendship lasted until Picasso's death in 1973. This encounter with Picasso was to be greatly influential to Quinn himself and to his subsequent work. Quinn is the author of several books and films about Picasso.
¶¶ Sir Roland Algernon Penrose CBE (14 October 1900 – 23 April 1984) was an English artist, historian and poet. He was a major promoter and collector of modern art and an associate of the surrealists in the United Kingdom. During the Second World War he put his artistic skills to practical use as a teacher of camouflage.
After studying architecture at Queens' College, Cambridge, Penrose switched to painting and moved to France, where he lived from 1922
During this period he became friends with the artists Pablo Picasso, Wolfgang Paalen and Max Ernst, who would have the strongest influence on his work and most of the leading Surrealists.
