A Japanese bento box complete with stackable containers, a tray, four rectangular plates, a water container and two bowls. The exterior is in black lacquer decorated in gilt maki-e with naturalistic motifs such as flowering branches, wisteria and stylized landscapes, along with fans (扇, ōgi) on the top.
The handle is made of bronze, while the interiors are finished in red lacquer.
Japanese lacquerware (漆器, shikki) represents one of Japan’s most celebrated artistic traditions. These works combine durability and brilliance with intricate decorative techniques such as maki-e and nashiji.
