The founding story

Catawiki was founded in Assen, NL by two Dutch entrepreneurs, René Schoenmakers, a passionate comic book collector, and Marco Jansen, an IT developer. The idea for the company was born after Schoenmakers spent hours searching online for rare comics to add to his collection – with little success. As a result, they created Catawiki in 2008: a website where collectors could interact with each other and keep track of their collections. The name Catawiki is a combination of the words ‘catalogue’ and ‘wiki’.

The website grew in popularity and in 2011 the founders introduced an auction feature. To ensure the objects would remain truly special, they also started hiring experts who would review and select every object before being offered in auction.

Over the years more special objects (and experts) have been added and next to Collectables Catawiki now offers Art, Design, Jewellery, Fashion, Classic Cars, Watches, Wine and much more. Today, over 75,000 objects are for sale and receive over one million bids each week. Catawiki is headquartered in Amsterdam with over 750 employees across the world.
