This traditional Japanese wooden Omoikane-no-mikoto (思兼命) Kagura-men (神楽面) is crafted using a single-block woodcarving technique. Its surface is polished to preserve the natural wood grain, which further emphasizes the aged aura of the wise elder figure. The mask boasts exquisite craftsmanship and a vivid, lifelike appearance.
Omoikane-no-mikoto is the god of wisdom in Japanese mythology, tasked with advising other deities—he symbolizes "wisdom" and often participates in critical decisions (e.g., he helped plan Amaterasu-Ōmikami’s return to Takamagahara after she hid herself). In Japanese Kagura (a ritualistic dance performance), the Omoikane-no-mikoto mask typically represents a "wise elder," aligning with his role as the "strategic brain" in mythology.
Inscriptions on the back of the mask:
Vertical text in the center: Omoikane-no-mikoto (思兼命) (role name)
Top right: Kagura-men (神楽面) (mask type)
Bottom right: Heisei 10 (平成十年) (production year, 1998)
Bottom left: Shokuzan Seihō saku (蜀山静峰 作) (artist’s signature, meaning "Made by Shokuzan Seihō")
Due to age, the wooden mask shows signs of natural aging, usage wear and minor scuffs. The gold leaf lacquer around the eye area has relatively obvious oxidation. Overall, the mask is in good condition.
