守繁栄徹 Morishige Eitetsu(1954–)

Hagi Haiyū Gyomon Hanaire — Hagi Ware Flower Vase with Ash Glaze and Fish Motif

This captivating flower vase (hanaire) is a distinguished work in the tradition of Hagi ware (Hagi-yaki), one of Japan's most celebrated ceramic styles, created by Morishige Eitetsu — a Hagi-based potter of considerable accomplishment and a full member of the Hagi Potters' Association.

The piece exemplifies the refined aesthetic sensibility that has defined Hagi ceramics for centuries: a quiet, meditative beauty rooted in the ideals of the Japanese tea ceremony.

The vase is covered in a warm, subtly variegated ash glaze (haiyū) that lends the surface a soft, luminous quality characteristic of fine Hagi work.

The graceful fish motif (gyomon) decorating the body adds a sense of movement and life, rendered with confident brushwork that speaks to the artist's mastery of painted ceramic decoration.

The generous, gently rounded form creates a natural presence well suited to the ikebana flower arrangements for which such vessels are traditionally intended.

A work of quiet refinement and unmistakable character, this vase comes with its original wooden storage box (tomobako) and a shiori (artist's leaflet), providing excellent provenance.

An ideal acquisition for collectors of contemporary Hagi ceramics.
