Minekiyo(峯清)– “Naruko Inaho and Flock of Sparrows” by Makie Kinrinji Natsume

Amid the pitch-black silence, golden brushstrokes depict the wind.
This natsume by Minekiyo is a masterpiece, depicting the brilliance of life in a flock of flying sparrows against the backdrop of an autumn countryside where rice sway.
Its graceful composition and delicate maki-e technique seem to condense the essence of autumn in Japan into a single poem.

The subject of this piece is a traditional auspicious image known as “Naruko Inaho Gunjaku” (Crying Rice and Flock of Sparrows).
The sight of ripe rice and flocks of flying sparrows symbolizes fertility, prosperity, and household safety.

The delicate lines of the swaying rice are astonishingly delicate,
and the shading of the gold powder and the varying pressure of the brush create a three-dimensional effect. The sparrows dancing there appear light and airy,
fluttering vibrantly through the pitch-black space.

The shape of this natsume is called a Kinrinji natsume,
and it is taller and somewhat more refined than a regular flat natsume.
Its neat form accentuates the stillness and tranquil atmosphere of autumn.

In the tea ceremony, natsume designs are chosen for each season,
and designs of rice ears and sparrows are favored as they truly symbolize the "harvestive season of autumn."
Using this natsume at a tea ceremony,

This piece uses an extremely advanced form of flat gold maki-e (gold lacquerware).
Using thin, even gold powder to depict the rice ears and sparrows with fine lines

and under the soft lighting of a tea room, it shimmers as if a breeze is passing through.
The gold lines that span the lid and body of the vessel truly represent the flow of wind.
