He wears a high-collared robe painted in dark pigment, with traces of decorative motifs on the torso and a belted waist. The lower garment is defined by crossed bands over the thighs and loosely modelled legs standing apart on flat feet. The head is sculpted with stylised facial features, including arched brows, eyes, and a moustache over thin red painted lips.
This piece has been precisely dated using a Thermo Luminescence analysis carried out by Ralf Kotalla. The report will accompany the lot.
Mingqi, "spirit objects" are small terracotta statues usually depicting court ladies, servants, dancers, and musicians - both men and women, but also horses, other domestic animals, mystical beasts and miniature architectural models of houses, farms, granaries. These items were buried together with deceased people in graves to serve them in the afterlife.
A similar example can be found in the Portland Art Museum, Accession Number 2004.114.10a-e and the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University, Object Number 2002.135.
