Ancient Chinese, Tang Dynasty Pottery Figure of Seated Female Musician - with Thermoluminescence Test!
Ca. AD 618 - 907
This charming terracotta figure depicts a seated female musician holding a small wind instrument (xun) to her mouth. She wears a long flaring skirt and a short-sleeved jacket, with traces of red, pink and white pigment across the surface. Her hair is gathered into a neat double topknot, and the face is carefully painted with arched brows.
This piece has been precisely dated using a Thermo Luminescence analysis carried out by Ralf Kotalla. The report will accompany the lot.
These Tang Dynasty figures are examples of tomb furnishings made to accompany the dead into the afterlife. They were meant to provide comfort, status, and protection, reflecting daily life and court culture. Common forms included dancers, musicians, attendants, animals, and foreign grooms, each playing a role in recreating the world the deceased knew.
A similar example can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Object Number: 23.180.4-.7.
