Item Description:
春日井鋼介 Kasugai Kosuke(1952–)
This guinomi (sake cup) is a work by Kasugai Kosuke, a ceramic artist from Aichi Prefecture active in the tradition of Seto and Mino wares.
The cup is formed in a robust, straight-sided cylindrical shape — a form that sits firmly in the hand and speaks directly of the potter's unhurried touch.
The entire surface is covered in a natural ash glaze (haiyū) of exceptional textural richness: a muted, dusty olive-grey glaze covers the upper body and interior, stippled throughout with melted white and silvery-blue specks where the ash has pooled and crystallised in the heat of the kiln.
A wide belt of exposed clay at the shoulder base reveals the warmth of the underlying stoneware body — iron-brown, rust-orange and dark charcoal tones where the glaze has thinned and scorched, creating a natural, landscape-like gradation.
The broad, flat unglazed base shows the coarse, sandy-white clay body and bears a subtle impressed seal mark.
This is a cup that rewards close inspection: no two views are alike, and the raw material quality of the glaze surface rewards the hand as much as the eye.
The piece comes with its original signed wooden box (tomobako).
