Japanese shippō-yaki reached its international zenith during the Meiji era, when pieces were eagerly sought by European collectors at international exhibitions. The technique involves soldering fine metal wires onto a copper or bronze base to form cells (compartments), then filling each cell with coloured glass paste and firing it to a brilliant gloss. The result is a surface that seems to glow from within, each colour contained and intensified by its wire boundary.
