A traditional Japanese two-tiered lacquerware food box (jūbako), crafted from wood with a lustrous black lacquer finish and adorned with classical nashiji (pear-skin gold ground) makie (gold sprinkled lacquer) decoration depicting cranes and tortoises — auspicious symbols of longevity and good fortune deeply rooted in Japanese culture. This 7-sun (approximately 21 cm) size box is ideal for serving osechi (New Year's celebration food) or special guests.
The upper tier features three interior dividers, while the lower tier is fitted with a single diagonal divider, allowing for elegant presentation of various foods. Produced by Sakurai Shikki, a respected lacquerware producer, this piece exemplifies the refined craftsmanship of Japanese urushi art.
The ornate nashiji background — created by sprinkling fine gold flakes into wet lacquer — gives the surface a luminous, shimmering quality that has captivated collectors for centuries. This item is unused (new old stock) but has some minor flaws: the lid shows slight thinning of the nashiji finish in one area, and there is a small crack in the lacquer at an inner corner of the lower tier, as visible in the auction photographs.
