賣家描述
Item Description:
宮﨑豊 Miyazaki Yutaka (1948–) — Mashiko Zōgan Stoneware Vase
A boldly formed stoneware vase by Miyazaki Yutaka, a Mashiko-born ceramic artist celebrated primarily for his mastery of the zōgan (inlay) technique.
The piece exemplifies the distinctive aesthetic of Mashiko ware: honest, earthy, and quietly powerful.
The vase rises from a wide, stable base through a full, rounded belly to a broad, open mouth — a generous silhouette that invites the eye to rest.
The surface treatment reflects the warm, rustic quality for which Mashiko pottery is celebrated.
The thrown form carries the natural irregularities and subtle hand-marks inherent to the studio pottery process, lending the piece an organic vitality and a sense of direct human presence.
Mashiko ware, developed in the nineteenth century and brought to international prominence by the great master Hamada Shoji, represents one of Japan's most celebrated folk pottery traditions.
Its emphasis on natural materials, honest form, and the beauty found in everyday objects continues to inspire collectors and pottery enthusiasts worldwide.
Size
Height: 20 cm
Width: 22 cm
Depth: 22 cm

Artist Profile
宮﨑豊 Miyazaki Yutaka (1948–) was born in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture in 1948 — the very heartland of Japan's celebrated folk pottery tradition. He trained at the Tochigi Prefectural Ceramics Guidance Center, where he studied both in the general and advanced research courses, and studied under the master potter Katori Ho. In 1974, he established his own kiln at its current location in Mashiko, and has since held solo and group exhibitions throughout Japan.
Miyazaki is known primarily for his work in the zōgan (inlay) technique, in which contrasting clays or slips are pressed into incised designs on the vessel surface and then scraped smooth, creating patterns of quiet precision and depth against the warm Mashiko stoneware ground. This demanding technique, rooted in ancient ceramic traditions, requires exceptional skill and patience, and Miyazaki has devoted his career to its mastery within the living folk-craft tradition of Mashiko.
