A vibrant silkscreen print by Imai Toshimitsu, one of the most celebrated Japanese artists of the twentieth century and a central figure of the international Art Informel movement.

The work is hand-signed by the artist in pencil and titled "Golden Leaves."

The composition evokes the luminous sensibility of Imai's mature period, in which the raw gestural energy of his early Informel years was progressively infused with the lyrical imagery of Japanese traditional aesthetics — a synthesis the artist described as a dialogue between East and West.

Golden leaves suggest both the transient beauty of autumn celebrated in Japanese poetic tradition and the expansive, shimmering quality of gold-leaf painting in the Rimpa school, reinterpreted through a thoroughly contemporary artistic vision.

Artist Profile
今井俊満 Imai Toshimitsu (1928–2002) was born in Kyoto and became one of the defining figures of postwar international art. After studying under masters including Umehara Ryuzaburo and Yasui Sotaro, he traveled abroad in 1952 and joined the Art Informel movement alongside leading avant-garde artists of the era. His energetic, densely impastoed abstractions won him rapid international acclaim, and in 1957 he was instrumental in introducing the Informel movement to Japan, triggering what critics described as an "Informel storm" in Japanese art circles.
From the 1980s onward, Imai transformed his practice, fusing his Informel foundations with Japanese classical motifs — flowers, birds, landscapes, and the seasons — in his celebrated "Kacho Fugetsu" (花鳥風月) series. He received numerous prestigious international honours recognising his outstanding contribution to art, and is recognized as a pivotal bridge between Japanese and Western avant-garde art.
