SICILY, Akrai. After 210 BC. Unit (Bronze, 22mm, 6,74g ). Wreathed head of Persephone to right. Rev. AKPAIΩN Demeter standing left, holding torch in her right hand and scepter in her left. Calciati 1. SNG ANS 902-3. Rare. Dark patina. Good Very fine.
Akrai was a small colony founded by Syracuse in 664 BC to secure the inland road to Gela. Its only autonomous coinage dates to the period after the capture of Syracuse by Marcellus and is likely connected to administrative changes Rome implemented on its province.
