A Chamba sculpture, Nigeria, collected in the North Jimeta region, incl. wooden stand.

The Urhobo are a major ethnic group in southern Nigeria, primarily residing in Delta State along the western Niger Delta. They speak the Urhobo language and have a long history as fishers and farmers, with rich cultural and spiritual traditions. Within their culture, statues, often referred to as “Urhobo statues,” are highly significant, serving both artistic and spiritual purposes. These sculptures, typically made of wood, represent spirits known as edjo, ancestors, or important figures in the community. They were traditionally kept in shrines and played a central role in rituals, sacrifices, and ceremonies, acting as mediators between the living community and the spiritual realm.

Urhobo statues often feature life-size or larger forms with commanding postures and expressive features, including stylized faces and vertical scarification marks. Many of these figures carry symbolic objects such as spears, swords, or containers linked to spiritual or medicinal power, reflecting their role as warrior spirits or ancestral protectors. They are usually part of shrine ensembles, connecting them to clan histories, origin stories, and social organization.
