賣家描述
Ancient Near Eastern Stone Stamp Seal Pendant – Hittite / Anatolian – Geometric Seal – 1500–900 BC
Material
Dark steatite or serpentine stone.
Measurements
Weight: 2.29 g
Seal diameter: 15 mm
Total height: 15 mm
Description
A finely carved ancient stone stamp seal pendant of conical form, originating from the Anatolian region and dating to the Late Bronze Age–Early Iron Age.
The seal features a rounded conical body terminating in a vertical perforation, allowing the object to be worn suspended from a cord or attached to personal ornaments.
The flat circular sealing surface is engraved with a geometric pattern composed of parallel diagonal ridges intersected by shorter incised lines, creating a structured cross-hatched motif. Such abstract designs are typical of Anatolian glyptic traditions, where geometric symbols often served as personal identifiers.
The engraving would produce a raised impression when pressed into clay or wax, allowing the seal to function as a personal mark of ownership or authority.
The stone shows an attractive dark surface patina with light mineral deposits within the engraved lines, consistent with age and prolonged burial.
Cultural Context
Stamp seals of this type were widely used throughout Anatolia during the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age, particularly within the cultural sphere of the Hittite and Neo-Hittite states.
Unlike the narrative scenes often seen on Mesopotamian cylinder seals, Anatolian stamp seals frequently display geometric patterns, abstract symbols, and linear motifs, which functioned as personal or workshop identifiers.
These seals served several purposes:
sealing containers or documents in clay
marking ownership of goods
authenticating transactions
functioning as personal amulets when worn as pendants
The suspension perforation suggests the seal was likely worn on a cord or necklace, allowing it to remain readily available for use.
Condition
Very good ancient condition.
Engraving remains clearly visible
Natural surface wear and patina
Ancient suspension perforation intact
Minor mineral deposits consistent with burial
No modern restoration observed.
Provenance
From a private European collection, assembled in the 1980s.
A provenance statement can be provided in PDF format upon request.
