賣家描述
RARE :
This horned mask, known as “Kayamba,” is associated with the Bwami initiation society of the Lega people from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Within the Bwami system, masks and sculptural objects play an essential role in the transmission of moral teachings, philosophical principles, and social values. The Kayamba mask symbolizes intelligence, wisdom, and cunning, qualities admired and cultivated among members of the society.
The material, proportions, and stylistic features of the mask often reflect the rank and level of initiation of its owner within the Bwami hierarchy. Such objects were not always worn directly on the face. In many cases, they were held in the hand during ritual performances, attached to initiation structures, or displayed collectively on ritual installations or miniature palisades during teaching ceremonies.
This type of mask formed part of a sophisticated symbolic system used to communicate ethical lessons and ancestral knowledge to initiates.
The piece displays a fine patina and visible signs of age and handling, consistent with traditional African ritual objects.
Origin: Democratic Republic of Congo
Ethnic group: Lega
Material: Wood
Period: 20th century
Sold without stand.
