French Napoleon III mantel clock with bronze philosopher statue – marble base – 19th century
Antique French Napoleon III period mantel clock dating to the second half of the 19th century, crafted in the decorative style typical of that era.
The clock features a sculptural composition with a philosopher or scholar seated beside a stack of books, depicted in a thoughtful pose. This type of subject was very common in French decorative clocks of the 19th century.
The upper sculpture is made of solid bronze, very heavy, with a beautiful natural patina of the metal. The base of the clock is also solid and heavy and is made with marble and metal elements, as was often the case with high-quality French mantel clocks.
The dial has Roman numerals and is equipped with a manually wound mechanical movement with a double winding hole for timekeeping and striking.
The object consists of two separate parts:
• the body of the clock with base
• the upper bronze sculpture
The sculpture is removable and can be lifted from the base.
General condition good considering the age of the object. Normal signs of wear and aging are present.
The clock is sold as seen in the photographs, which are part of the description.
Ideal item for collectors of:
• antique clocks
• French antiques
• 19th-century decorative objects
• classical or vintage furnishings.
