This is a cast bronze vase by Sotaro Saegusa, a sculptor known as a Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) artist.
It was made using the techniques of the traditional craft "Takaoka Copperware," and its authenticity can be confirmed by the accompanying box and the artist's seal on the bottom of the vase.
1. Details of the work
Product name: Cast bronze vase
Appearance:
It features a rounded, plump, and stable shape.
The surface has a finish called "sabi-do" (rusted copper) or "kote" (antique finish), expressing the weighty feel unique to metal and a deep, aged color.
Signature/Inscription:
The character "惣," which is Sotaro Saegusa's signature, is engraved on the bottom of the vase.
2. Artist: Sotaro Saegusa (1911-2006)
Biography: A sculptor from Kagawa Prefecture. Graduated from Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts). He served as a member of the Nitten Exhibition and a professor at Nagoya University of Arts.
Style: He worked extensively in a wide range of genres, from abstract sculptures to zodiac animal figurines (such as the Dragon and Ox) and traditional flower vases. His metalwork pieces, particularly those utilizing Takaoka copperware techniques, are highly regarded as masterpieces that combine artistry and practicality.
3. Care and Storage
Daily Care: Simply wiping with a soft, dry cloth is sufficient. Copper products are prone to discoloration from hand oils, so it's ideal to lightly wipe them after touching with bare hands.
When Arranging Flowers: Copper has antibacterial properties, which helps prevent water from spoiling and extends the life of cut flowers.
