Exceptional 12-Piece Chinese Export Silver Dessert Set - "Bamboo" Design - Wang Hing & Co - c. 1900-1925
Description:
A magnificent and complete 12-piece dessert cutlery set (6 knives and 6 forks), crafted in the iconic "Bamboo" aesthetic. This set is a superb example of Chinese Export Silver (CES) from the late Qing Dynasty (approx. 1900-1925).
Design & Craftsmanship:
The handles are expertly hand-wrought to resemble natural bamboo stalks, complete with realistic nodes (knots) and finely chased textural details. The knife blades feature delicate hand-engraved bamboo foliage, showcasing the high level of artistry from the Shanghai/Canton workshops.
Hallmarks
Each piece is clearly marked with:
• HM: The retailer's mark for the famous firm Wang Hing & Co (Shanghai/Canton) probably 1900-1925.
• 90: Indicating a silver purity of 90% (standard for premium Export Silver).
• Chopmarks (Artisan Marks): Original Chinese artisan characters (likely "祥" - Xiang). In the guild system of the time, these marks identified the specific master silversmith or workshop commissioned by Wang Hing to execute the work, ensuring the highest standards of quality control.
Historical Context:
Chinese Export Silver was created by master silversmiths in treaty ports like Canton and Shanghai specifically for the Western market. It represents a unique fusion of Western forms (such as this dessert cutlery) and traditional Chinese motifs.
• Symbolism: Bamboo is one of the "Four Gentlemen" in Chinese art, symbolizing strength, flexibility, and longevity.
• Usage: In the late 19th century, sets like this were the ultimate status symbol for wealthy Western merchants and diplomats living in the East, as well as for the European elite who collected "Chinoiserie" to display during lavish dinner parties.
Specifications:
• Set: 6 Dessert Knives & 6 Dessert Forks (12 pieces total).
• Weight: Total gross weight of 560 grams.
• Dimensions: Knife: 21,5 cm / Fork: 19 cm
• Pattern: Bamboo.
• Condition: Excellent antique condition with a beautiful natural patina. Probably used only occasionally as it has no major dents or repairs.
• Storage: Comes in a protective green felt cutlery roll for safe keeping.
A rare opportunity to acquire a complete, heavy-gauge set from a premier Shanghai retailer. Perfect for serious collectors of Asian Art or fine antique silver.
