DESCRIPTION
INTRODUCTION
A fine Turkana milk container of the akarum type, carved in wood and distinguished by its tall, elegant proportions and striking gourd-like silhouette. Combining utility, mobility and aesthetic refinement, this vessel is a characteristic object of pastoral domestic life.

ETHNOGRAPHIC CONTEXT
Among the Turkana of northern Kenya, wooden milk containers formed an essential part of everyday life within mobile pastoral communities. Designed for use, transport and storage, such vessels belong to a material culture shaped by movement, adaptation and long familiarity with cattle-based subsistence. Beyond their practical role, they often display a remarkable sense of proportion and surface treatment, giving them a strong sculptural presence.

FORM AND SURFACE
This example is particularly appealing for its elongated profile, with rounded lower body, narrow waist and flaring mouth. The surface is enriched by red ochre decoration contrasted with darker, almost blackened areas, creating a vivid yet restrained visual rhythm. Leather straps reinforce the vessel and recall its practical use in hanging, carrying or stabilising the object in a domestic setting. A small band of beadwork at the neck adds a subtle ornamental accent.

CONDITION
Good overall condition, with visible wear consistent with age and use.
Fine patina of use.
Surface marks, abrasions and minor losses in places.
Indigenous repairs.
Leather elements show age and wear.
Sold with its grass support ring.
No conventional stand.

INCLUDED
Grass support ring.
