A mask from the Lega people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, featuring its traditional long fiber beard.

Lega masks are central to the Bwami society, a semi-secret association that governs the social and moral life of the community. This particular mask is adorned with a long fringe of natural fibers, representing the beard of an elder and symbolizing wisdom, seniority, and high rank within the Bwami hierarchy.

The mask itself displays the iconic heart-shaped face and minimalist features that have made Lega art a profound influence on modern Western aesthetics. It was typically used in initiation ceremonies to convey moral aphorisms and ancestral teachings.

Condition
There are visible scratches, age-related wear, and a natural patina on the wood. The fiber beard shows signs of age and handling, which are expected in authentic ethnographic pieces. Please refer to the photos for a detailed view of the surface and the condition of the fibers.
