Item Description:
伊藤彰敏 Ito Akitoshi(1951– ) — Shikokusai Mizu-sashi (Purple-Black Glaze Fresh Water Jar for Tea Ceremony), Ichifugama Kiln
A refined and striking fresh water jar (mizu-sashi) for the Japanese tea ceremony (chado), executed in Ito Akitoshi's signature shikokusai (purple-black glaze) technique — a deeply lustrous, layered glaze treatment that fuses rich violet-purple and deep black tones into an surface of remarkable depth and quiet intensity.
Standing 18 cm tall with a wide open mouth of 17 cm, the form is generous and self-assured — a vessel conceived to hold cool, fresh water and to bring stillness to the tea space.
The shikokusai glaze creates a surface that moves between dark indigo, warm purple, and black as the light shifts, evoking both the refinement of classical ceramics and a distinctly personal, contemporary sensibility.
The piece is signed and comes with its original wooden storage box (tomobako), storage cloth (tomobukuro), and the artist's full ceramic biography (torekki).
Ito works from his own kiln, Ichifugama, in Chino City, Nagano Prefecture, and has exhibited extensively through the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition (Nitten) and the Japan Contemporary Craft Art Exhibition (Nihon Gendai Kogei Bijutsuten), earning numerous prizes and recognition throughout his long career.
