Dawn over the Arita Valley – Porcelain Vase by Fujii Shumei
Porcelain vase by Fujii Shumei, from a European collection.
Shipped from Europe: no customs fees for EU bidders.
This piece, titled Dawn over the Arita Valley, features a refined, gently flared form that provides an ideal surface for the unfolding landscape decoration.
The composition depicts a misty mountain valley at daybreak. The forest textures are created using the artist’s signature konoha-gihō technique, in which leaves are pressed onto the surface before firing. Their natural vein patterns form delicate organic textures, structuring the landscape into layered depths.
From the dense, dark foreground forests to the softly fading hills in the distance, the composition creates a gradual spatial recession. A subtle gradient shifts from deep blue tones to lighter, almost opalescent hues, suggesting the first light of dawn. A faint lavender tint enriches the transition toward the pale upper area, enhancing the atmospheric depth.
The overall impression is one of calm and contemplation, characteristic of Shumei’s poetic interpretation of nature.
A comparable example was exhibited at the British Museum in 2001 (see exhibition catalogue photos), underlining the institutional recognition of this type of work.
The vase is sold with its original tomobako (signed wooden box) and its original price tag, supporting its authenticity and provenance.
