賣家描述
Very rare 12 Chromo Set - Complete Multi-Sport set including one of the earliest representations of baseball in the world - Huntley & Palmers - 1878 - 11,4 x 7,7 cm
The gold-bordered sports cards offered by Huntley and Palmers Biscuit company present a varied multi-sport approach in these sets. These popular sets from the late 1800s also include some of the earliest depictions of sports on trade cards.
A common misconception is that all of the gold-bordered sports cards comprise one set. In fact, there are really two different sets:
- Type 1 (Full Picture Background):
Baseball
Canoeing
Cricket
Cycling
Golf
Hare Coursing
Jumping Rope
Lacrosse
Polo
Running/Cross Country
Tennis
Walking
- Type 2 (Partially White Background with Circle):
Bird Hunting
Canoeing
Cricket
Fishing
Horse Jumping (Fence)
Hurdling (Fence)
Ice Skating
Polo
Rifle Shooting
Rowing
Tennis
Yachting
The set includes the very Rare Chromo - The Huntley & Palmers Baseball Card.
The interest in Huntley & Palmers and baseball stems primarily from a late 19th-century advertising (trade) card, considered by collectors to be one of the earliest depictions of baseball in the world.
The Huntley & Palmers Baseball Card (c. 1878)
Produced by the renowned British biscuit manufacturer based in Reading, this card is part of a multi-sport series used to promote their products at the 1878 Universal Exposition in Paris.
Visual Description: It depicts a vertical game scene with a batter, a pitcher, a catcher, and a third baseman.
A notable detail is the batter's uniform, which bears the letters "HPC" (Huntley & Palmers Company/Corporation).
Historical Significance: Although of British origin, this card is highly prized by American collectors because it predates the majority of baseball cards produced in the United States in the 1880s.
Current Value: the baseball card can fetch between $200 and $400 even in poor condition.
Company and Sporting Background
International Publicity: Although Huntley & Palmers was an English company, the back of the card is written in French to highlight their "Grand Prix" award won at the Paris Exposition.
Sporting Culture: The company actively supported sports. It founded the Huntley & Palmers Recreation Club in 1898 and provided equipment for various sports, including cricket and football (the local Reading FC team was nicknamed the "Biscuit Men").
The chromolithographs are in very good condition; see photos.
Shipping costs with tracking and insurance: France/Belgium: 25 Euros
