【Product details】
This is a genuine Japanese wakizashi from the Edo period, offered together with its complete traditional mounting. As the shorter companion sword worn by samurai, the wakizashi was an essential part of their daily life and remains a highly collectible form today.
The sword is housed in a classic black lacquer scabbard, giving it a refined and understated appearance typical of the period. The iron sword guard features openwork with heart-shaped cut-outs known as “boar’s eye” motifs, traditionally believed to ward off evil and symbolise protection.
The hilt fittings are decorated with waves and fish, motifs associated with movement, resilience, and good fortune. The handle is wrapped in blue cord over ray skin, with decorative rooster elements beneath. The rooster symbolises courage, vigilance, and protection, often linked to warding off misfortune.
The sword comes with a copy of its Firearms and Swords Registration Certificate, as the original document will be returned to the authorities. It is registered in Aichi Prefecture (No. 58343) as a wakizashi, with a blade length of 51.5 cm and curvature of 1.7 cm. It has two peg holes and is unsigned, with the certificate issued on 17 November, Showa 58 (1983).
The blade shows characteristic forging marks, including line-like openings and small dark spots. There are a couple of extremely small nicks on the cutting edge. The sword guard has some rust. The blue handle wrapping shows heavy wear, fraying, fading, and staining, and parts of the underlying ray skin are missing. The black lacquer scabbard has scratches, wear, and small dents from use, but remains structurally sound. Signature and datation are subject to authentication. The display stand is not included. Please refer to the photos for details.
Overall length of the blade (including the tang): approx. 64 cm
Overall length including scabbard: approx. 72 cm
