賣家描述

*From the store

I think this is a very rare subject matter.

Even in hanging scroll paintings, Benkei—who is often depicted alongside Yoshitsune—is not especially common, but Yoshitsune himself (whose childhood name was Ushiwakamaru) is seen even less often.

Based on the box inscription, the work is thought to date from around 1810.

The mounting is old and of high quality. In particular, the *Ichimonji* (the two strips of fabric placed directly above and below the painting) is made of an expensive textile known as Takeyamachi, embroidered with a phoenix design in gold thread.

Unfortunately, there was some fraying in the lower *Ichimonji*, but it has deliberately been left as is.

There are also creases in the blank area at the top of the painting and around Ushiwakamaru’s knees.

In addition, since words such as “a fine work by Shōnen” and “May” can be seen on the box, written by the original owner, it can be inferred that this work was displayed for Japan’s Boys’ Festival (*Tango no Sekku*), a custom in which warrior paintings and warrior dolls are displayed in May to pray for the healthy growth of boys.

牛若丸 (Ushiwakamaru / Minamoto no Yoshitsune)

A famous historical figure in Japan.
He was the childhood name of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a samurai of the late Heian period.
He was born in 1159 as the son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo.
After his father’s death in the Heiji Rebellion, he was raised at Kurama-dera.
According to legend, he learned swordsmanship from Sōjōbō, a mythical tengu.
