Antique Greek Orthodox Icon - Saint George "The Trophy-bearer" - Hand-Crafted Repoussé Riza on Wood - Circa 1900
A significant example of Greek religious folk art from the turn of the 20th century. This icon of Saint George the Dragon Slayer is not a simple reproduction but a complex, hand-assembled piece of devotional art.
The central scene depicts St. George on his horse, with his face and hands rendered via a high-quality chromolithograph inset into the metalwork, creating a beautiful "mixed media" effect. The silver-plated metal cover is a work of repoussé (embossed) art. It features a deep, "stepped" (raised) frame that gives the icon a monumental, 3D presence. A key sign of artisanal work is the four additional metal plates pinned by hand onto the corners. These reinforce the structure and add a layer of decorative complex. The wooden carrier is hand-assembled from solid wooden planks (slabs). This structural detail is a hallmark of authentic period craftsmanship. The back is still covered with its original late 19th/early 20th-century decorative floral paper. This paper "lining" was a signature finish of high-quality workshops of the era and has been remarkably preserved.
The icon is in excellent antique condition, showing a rich, authentic patina on the metal surfaces. The wooden structure is stable. All original mounting pins are present. The original hanging hook is intact, making it ready to be displayed.
Greece, circa 1890-1910.
Dimensions: 24 x 18 x 3,4 cm.
