■ Description
This item is a Japanese tea bowl (matcha chawan) from Hagi ware, a traditional craft of Yamaguchi Prefecture, created by Tōen of Tenryū Kiln.
The piece features the soft clay texture characteristic of Hagi ware, along with gentle reddish hues and mottled patterns formed during firing. These natural variations create a simple yet deeply expressive appearance. The glaze pooling and subtle color changes enhance its aesthetic, and the bowl is expected to develop further character over time, a phenomenon often referred to as the “Hagi no Nanabake” (the seven transformations of Hagi ware).
The form is well-balanced with a slightly rounded shape, and the gently uneven rim reflects the warmth of hand craftsmanship. Inside the bowl, the flow and pooling of glaze create an attractive visual effect when preparing tea.
Around the foot, natural kiln effects and clay texture can be observed, and a kiln mark is present on the base. The piece comes with its original wooden box (tomobako) and an information leaflet, indicating its value as a signed work.
Suitable for practical use in tea ceremony, as well as for collection or display.
